Tent Lights White

My neighbors build a small tent outside made of tarp and branches during this time every year.?

I know that they are Jewish, and I wondered if it has something to do with Yom Kippur, as it just passed. They create a tent out of wood and tarp, and add tree branches to it with white lights on the inside. They sleep outside in it for a period of a few days. This is the 3rd year in a row that they've done this and it's always during the same time of the year. I wondered if anyone had any insight as to why. I'm not sure if it was a religious ceremony of some kind and I was curious, but don't know them well enough to stop and ask. Thanks!

It's for my friends son's extra credit (gess the musician on the teachers computer).

the last time we did this type of thing the band was Story of the Year (blah!) so obiously he doesn't have very good taste.
